Las Vegas (NWN) — Devin Lloyd returns an interception for a touchdown, Cam Rising threw for another score and No. 14 Utah secured the first Rose Bowl berth in school history with a 38-10 win over No. 10 Oregon in Friday night’s Pac-12 Championship Game.

The game was a carbon copy of the one in Salt Lake City two weeks earlier when the Utes (10-3, No. 17 CFP) pulled out early and won 38-7.

While that game ended playoff hopes for Oregon (10-3, No. 10), the rematch gave coach Kyle Whittingham and the Utes the Rose Bowl award they’ve wanted since joining the Pac-12 in 2011. .

It has emotionally shadowed the past 12 months for the Utes program which has dealt with the deaths of two players.

Utah had lost its first two trips to Oregon in the conference title game two years earlier, but this time left little doubt.

Rising prepared a TD drive on early possession after converting a stealth fourth near midfield. Tavon Thomas shaded it two yard race,

Lloyd later returned an interception from 34 yards for a score in the first quarter, and Utah took the game away by scoring twice in the final 27 seconds of the first half.

Rising hit Dalton Kincaid on an 11-yard pass with 27 seconds to spare. Malone Mattele then blocked a mis-advised pass from Anthony Brown 23-0 to set up Jadon Redding’s 50-yard field goal in the final game of the half.

Thomas and TJ Pleasure added TD runs in the second half for the Utes to the delight of the vast contingent of Utah fans among 56.511 in attendance for the first title game in Las Vegas.

takeaway

Oregon: The Ducks had playoff aspirations after winning at Ohio State in September, but struggled to maintain that level of play. They were in an upset at Stanford on October 2 and were denied a third straight Conference title before being bowled out 76–17 in two defeats by Utah in the final three weeks.

Utah: The Utes are playing almost as well as anyone in the country at the end of the season with six straight wins. But Rising’s starting quarterback before losing back-to-back at BYU and San Diego State in September means the Pac-12 champion will miss out on the college football playoffs for the fifth season in a row.

moment of loudness

There was an emotional moment during a break in the second quarter when Utah fans took part in their “moment of thrust” to honor Ty Jordan and Aaron Lowe, who both died of gunshot wounds nine months apart.

A video was played as a tribute Fans light up the stadium with cell phone flashlights and rejoiced. The Utes have held “moments of emphasis” instead of moments of silence to honor former players.

Lowe’s mother, Donna Lowe-Stern, also served as an honorary captain for the game.
