No wonder the first no-hitter of the season required a team effort

It was only a matter of time before baseball’s next no-hitter, and the way it unfolded was somewhat fitting.

The New York Mets – one of the sport’s biggest April success stories this year – evacuated Philadelphia on Friday night. And it was not a brilliant performance from Max Schaezer or Jacob deGrom, but a team effort that required five pitchers and 159 pitches.

That’s baseball so far in 2022. crime is lowSo the conditions are ripe for no-hitters, but teams have been careful with starting pitchers in the aftermath of the lockdown.

In the first series of the season, San Diego pulled Yu Darvish after six no-hit innings and did the same when Sean Manea played seven hitless innings in the next game. Clayton Kershaw had a perfect game through seven against Minnesota, but that also came out.

The Mets didn’t have a particularly difficult decision with their starter. Tyler Magill scored three runs in five innings and threw 88 pitches before being dismissed. Drew Smith, Jolie Rodriguez and Seth Lugo continued the no-hitter, and then Edwin Diaz dismissed Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos and JT Realmuto to finish it.

Of those five pitchers, Diaz is the biggest name, although Megil (4-0, 1.93 ERA) is a big reason the Mets are out in the NL East despite deGrom’s absence due to shoulder concerns, despite a three-game lead.

At this point in the season, there have been (one) as many combined no-hitters as in the entire game. Walker Buehler is the only starter to cover the distance so far, throwing a three-hit shutout Monday night in Arizona.

But that doesn’t mean the solo no-hitter is about to become an endangered species. Last year, there were nine no-hitters, and in seven of them, the starter went completely.

One team that isn’t benefiting from this suppressed offensive environment is the Cincinnati Reds, who are already 11 1/2 games out of first place in the NL Central at 3-19. The Reds have a team ERA of 6.15, worse than any other staff.

Joy Votto, after resurfacing in 2021, is batting .122, with no home runs through his first 90 plate appearances.

The two worst teams in baseball based on run differentials are in the NL Central, but even the Pittsburgh Pirates are six games ahead of Cincinnati in the standings.

return of the week

Toronto trailed Boston 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday night before rallying it to a tie by George Springer on a two-run homer. Raimel Tapia hit a sacrificial fly in the 10th to give the Blue Jays a 6-5 win. According to Statcast, the Red Sox had a 96.9% chance of winning In the top of the ninth, when he had a three-run lead and was a man first.

This season has been off to a poor start for Boston in the tough AL East. A defeat in Baltimore on Sunday reduced the Red Sox to 9-14, just half a game ahead of the last-place Orioles and 7 1/2 behind the division-leading Yankees.

General Knowledge Answer:

James Shields, who had 11 in 2011. Ironically, Shields did so while pitching for Tampa Bay, which has made the “opener” so fashionable in recent years. Ryan Yarbrough’s full game last year is the only game thrown by a Rays pitcher since the start of the 2017 season.
