With the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia later this year, Team India is faced with a selection dilemma as there are only a few games left before the tournament begins. While the management has given several new players a chance to impress in the ongoing T20I series against South Africa, it is still unclear whether veteran pacer Mohammed Shami will make it to the Indian team for the T20 World Cup. Former India pacer Ashish Nehra said that although Shami may not play in the T20 World Cup in Australia, the managers should definitely consider Shami for next year’s ODI World Cup.

“Looks like he is not in the plans at the moment (for the T20 World Cup). But, if the management needs Shami, we all know his abilities as a bowler. I can understand that Doesn’t he play the T20 World Cup. He will continue to play Test cricket, and if you want to give a chance to the young players, they should definitely consider him for the 50-over World Cup next year,” Nehra Said during a conversation on Cricbuzz.

Shami is likely to play for India during the sixth and final Test (July 1-5) against England, which will conclude last year’s Test series.

Both India and England will also play three ODIs from July 11.

Underlining that England is the team to beat in white-ball cricket, Nehra said that India would like to play their best players, adding that Shami is definitely one of them.

“We don’t have many ODIs this year and Shami is on a break at the moment after the IPL. India could play him for a 50-over game in England after the Test match. You will play three ODIs against top quality England. A white-ball team like that, and you would definitely love to beat them. And for that, you need your best bowlers. I will definitely take Shami in that bracket,” he said.

Coming to the England vs India Test series, the visitors lead 2-1 in the series after the fifth Test was canceled due to a COVID outbreak in the Indian camp.
