nothing phone (1): we have 5 questions about the device

The Nothing Phone (1) is one of the most awaited and highly anticipated smartphones right now. Even though the launch is only a few weeks away, there are some questions about the phone that remain unanswered. Ahead of the launch of the device, which will debut next month on July 12, here are five questions about the Nothing Phone (1) that we still need answers to.

1. What does the front of the phone look like?

Nothing recently revealed the full look of the Nothing Phone (1) from the back, revealing a unique, semi-transparent white back with illumination strips. However, none of the revealed images, leaked renders or any other view of the phone (1) reveal what the front of the phone looks like.

The front panel has been kept so secret that we still don’t know if the Nothing Phone (1) will have narrow bezels or a big chin at the bottom. We still don’t know what kind of notch or punch-hole cutout we will see on the device.

2. Which processor will power the phone?

Nothing Phone (1) has been offered by Carl Pei and the rest of the Nothing team for months. Unfortunately, one of the most important aspects of the phone, the processor, is still kept a secret.

Despite not revealing soon whether the company will be partnering with Qualcomm for the chipset of the first Nothing phone, we still don’t know what processor will be inside the Nothing phone. More importantly, we have no confirmation on whether the chip will be a flagship Snapdragon 800-series chip or a midrange 700-series, as multiple reports have suggested.

3. Will there be other color options except white?

The white version of the Nothing Phone (1) was all over the web this week, but we still don’t know if it will be the phone’s only color. Most of the smartphones are offered with multiple color options to attract a large segment of the users. A black version of the Nothing Ear (1), the only other product at Nothing at this point, was launched months after the launch of the original white Ear (1). Perhaps we may see a similar strategy with the phone (1), with more color options launching later.

4. Will the phone have an in-display fingerprint sensor or a side mounted sensor?

Since the front of the Nothing Phone (1) is yet to be revealed in any promotional material, it is difficult to determine whether the under-display fingerprint scanner will make it to the Nothing Phone (1). Most phones today feature a fingerprint scanner along with the power button below the display or on the right side of the phone. The company hasn’t confirmed what kind of display technology we’ll see on the device, so it’s difficult to determine what kind of fingerprint sensor the phone will pack right now.

However, in the recently revealed design, we noticed that the phone (1) has flat, metal edges and buttons, the kind of buttons commonly seen on side-mounted fingerprint sensors.

5. For how many years will the phone get the update?

Carl Pei showed the software experience of Nothing Phone (1) in March 2022. The phone will apparently run Android 12 out of the box along with a new custom skin called NothingOS. However, we still don’t know what the update schedule for the phone will look like down the line.

While most Android phones from different brands currently run on two years of systems and three or four years of security updates, nothing can differentiate itself by offering longer support. But it’s a mystery right now and we’ll have to wait a little longer to know for sure.
