nothing shows the evolution of the phone (1) notification LED

Cryptic would be an understatement when describing Carl Pei’s Nothing. Until a week ago, the company was slowly trickle-feeding its audience and supporters for its upcoming smartphone, the Phone (1), consisting mostly of short snippets. nothing, That all changed when Nothing decided to show off its smartphone party trick at an in-person event. Today, we get to hear a little more about the phone and its LEDs, thanks to a new video posted by MKBHD.

Front Of Nothing Phone (1)

MKBHD gained exclusive access to Nothing Phone (1) and featured front and back. While the front looks like your typical Android smartphone (though with equal bezels), the rear looks unique. The most unique feature of the phone is not its clear back design, but its LED. The phone uses over 900 LEDs to create its own unique pattern called the Glyph interface. There is a small C-shaped pattern that surrounds the camera and a large C-shaped pattern that surrounds the wireless charging pad. There is also a shape that looks like an exclamation mark at the bottom and a dash in the upper right corner.

The Glyph interface is not just a beautiful light show and provides functionality. The LEDs will pulse whenever you receive an incoming notification and may even glow when you start wireless charging. The lights can also show your charge status, letting you know how much battery is drained without even turning on the display. The LEDs do not stay lit continuously and can be reactivated by simply shaking the phone.

The Glyph interface will feature a set of ten ringtones that will also feature synced LED patterns. Users will also be able to pair the light pattern with specific contacts. Customization can also be done in apps, letting users know what type of notification has arrived. While this may sound dull, it is significant, as it is believed to be an evolution of the notification LED. The Glyph interface can also be used as a fill light when taking photos or videos. Last but not least, there’s also a flashing red LED that lets people know when you’re recording.

Nothing Phone Light Bar (1)

It’s quite a concept, but one has to wonder how long the honeymoon period will last. It will be interesting to see how far anything can take this movement and see how many people stick with for the journey. The company will hold an event on July 12. If you are a bit worried and can’t wait a few weeks, you can always take your chance and bid on the first 100 handsets that are up for auction now. Just beware, as while the handset doesn’t seem to offer global support, the company says it might not work either entirely or at all in North America.
