Odermatt Masters Birds Of Pre Course To Win Super-G Race | NWN News

Beaver Creek, Colo. (NWN) — Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt glided effortlessly through the steep and sun-drenched Birds of Prey course to win the men’s Super-G race on Thursday.

It is the second victory of the youth season for the 24-year-old Odermatt, who captured a giant slalom race in Austria in October.

Odermatt completed the technical course in 1 min 08.61 s and beat Austria’s Mathias Meyer by 0.78 s. The real surprise on a hot day at Beaver Creek was the performance of Canadian Broderick Thompson. Thompson, the 35th racer on the course, found a fast line to finish third and knock Germany’s Andreas Sander off the podium.

It was Thompson’s first World Cup podium finish. The 27-year-old said his strong feeling was “disbelief”.

“I knew I had a good run, but I saw the timing and seeing the third, I can’t put it into words,” he said.

Another impressive display from Odermatt, which is turning to watch with the Beijing Games turning a corner.

“His skiing is good. His strategy is very aggressive,” said Meyer. “And that’s what makes him so fast.”

The top American finish was Ryan Cochran-Siegel for 19th and 1.95 seconds behind Odermatt’s time. A total of 14 wrestlers did not complete the challenging course.

There will be another Super-G race on Friday, followed by downhills on Saturday and Sunday.
