It’s official: Novak Djokovic won’t be able to play the Indian Masters in Wales. Serbia, the five-time champion of the tournament, did not receive an exemption to enter the United States, because he was not vaccinated against the coronavirus and therefore will not be able to play the first masters 1000 times.
Djokovic had asked for a waiver to enter the country because the United States has not yet lifted its policy against the coronavirus. But the government of the country has decided not to relax its position against those people who do not obey the orders and therefore the number 1 in the world does not play the tournament.

Who replaces Djokovic in Indian Wells?
The Serbians have already paid their withdrawal from the tournament, in which Basilashvili will be replaced by Georgian Nikoloz. In addition to this loss, due to the situation, the presence of Djokovic is also very much in the air before the next tournament, the Miami Masters 1000 in two weeks.
Djokovic will thus miss the Indian Wells for the third consecutive year. Considering the tournament was suspended in 2020 due to the pandemic, he did not play since 2019, when he was surprised in the third round by Phillip Kohlschreiber. In 2021, the event did not take place until a few weeks after the US Open, in mid-October, due to the new calendar generated by the corona virus. In 2022, he also did not enter California for the same reason as this year: he did not have permission to enter the United States because he was not vaccinated.

His loss joins Rafa Nadal, who has not yet appeared after suffering a hip injury at the Australian Open. The Spaniard announced his resignation a few days before the resignation from the Indian Wells and Miami Masters 1000 so that he could focus on the clay court season. Carlos Alcaraz, who was still signed for the tournament despite the injury he suffered in Rio de Janeiro and prevented him from playing in Acapulco. Due to deadlines, he intends to act on the results, although these will be fair.
