Open Jim: Should Badgers football fans be concerned about the number of players leaving the program?

I think players like Chandler and Lyles are just trying to cope with the influx of transfers after the season. They come out in the front row hoping to find a place to play before the seats disappear.

But again, this transfer situation is worth keeping an eye on.

UW added unexpectedly on Tuesday when Michigan state defenseman Kalon Gerwin announced he would be joining the Badgers next season as a certified transfer. This adds much needed experience to the position where UW will have to replace starters Fayon Hicks and Caesar Williams.

Considering that the Badgers are three “back” positions behind where they started the season, I would like this position to be considered either in the preparatory series or on the transfer portal. Jadne Ott, a four-star promising California player, visited the UW earlier this month, but the Badgers will have to beat four Pac-12 programs – Oregon, California, Colorado and Arizona – to get it.

In my opinion, getting feedback from the transfer portal will not be easy because the game time will be limited in the position that includes Bralon Allen and Chaz Mellusi, unless Mellusi decides to leave early and try to play in the NFL draft. So the UW is in a weird place: it needs to add depth, but it’s not an attractive landing spot for a tailback who wants a carry right away.
