Opens applications for Excelsior Scholarships to attend university without the cost of NY tuition

New York – New York State has opened applications for the Excelsior Scholarship which allows qualified full-time students to attend a SUNY or CUNY two-year or four-year university at no cost in the spring of 2023. Tuition, Gov. Cathy Hochul announced Tuesday.

Students planning to start college for the autumn term of 2023 should not complete the application at this time. Excelsior 2023-2024 applications will open in the late spring of next year. What is Excelsior Scholarship?

The Excelsior Scholarship, in conjunction with other student financial aid programs, allows students to attend a SUNY or CUNY college tuition-free. The program covers tuition for eligible SUNY and CUNY students.

Who is eligible?

Students from families with a federal adjusted gross income of up to $125,000 qualify for the Excelsior Scholarship for Spring. Students should also:

  • Plan to attend a SUNY or CUNY two- or four-year college, including community colleges and the charter colleges of Cornell University and Alfred University.
  • Complete 30 credits per year for your program of study (including summer and winter terms). Enroll in at least 12 credits per term.
  • Be on track to graduate with an associate’s degree in two years or a bachelor’s degree in four years.
  • Be a New York State resident and have lived in New York State for 12 consecutive months prior to the beginning of the term.

How much is the scholarship?

The Excelsior Scholarship covers any remaining gap in tuition expenses of up to $5,500 after other federal and state grants and scholarships have been applied.

To determine the award amount, the tuition fee charged* for the first academic year is subtracted from the total dollar amount awarded from other student financial aid awards, including Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) awards.
