SAN DIEGO—The San Diego Unified School District School Choice Application window for the 2022-23 school year opened today, giving students the opportunity to enroll in magnet programs or schools outside the boundaries of their neighborhoods.
This program is open to all San Diego Unified students except for out-of-district students and students attending private or charter schools.
Choice options are expanding to an even younger age group with San Diego Unified’s new Universal Transitional Kindergarten program, which provides education opportunities for children to the youngest learners at 56 school sites, which last until Sept. turns four years old.
Typically, more than 10,000 area students apply to the choice program to attend one of the more than 170 schools at San Diego Unified. Last year, about 75 percent of all students placed in one of their three school choices.
“While a neighborhood school may be suitable for many families, San Diego Unified provides an opportunity for parents to apply for Choice at any school,” said Marceline Marques, the district’s operations support officer.
“Parents may be looking for a school with language immersion, visual and performing arts, STEAM, or a special program of international baccalaureate.
“Perhaps they are looking for a strong athletic program or a school located near their workplace, family or childcare provider,” Marks said.
“Whatever the reason, the right San Diego Unified School is waiting for you to apply.”
School choice enrollment is determined through a computerized lottery system, with importance given to factors such as sibling enrollment and magnet program continuity. No priority is given based on when the application is received, so long as it is received by the November 15 priority window deadline.
This year, San Diego Unified is developing a multi-language app to help streamline the application process of choice in addition to the traditional online option, which can be accessed through the district’s home page at www.sandiegounified.org. Is.
The district’s Family Engagement Department has set up two online Zoom forums to help families with their questions about the program: Wednesday, October 13, and Wednesday, October 27. Both forums are scheduled to run from 5:30 to 6:30. Interpretation services will be available from 5:15 pm onwards
In addition, San Diego Unified offers individual counseling for families who wish to discuss their options with an enrollment specialist, or for those having difficulty with the application process.
The bilingual staff at the Family Welcome and Enrollment Center is available Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 619-260-2410 in both English and Spanish.
Although families can apply for the option at any time during the current school year, the priority application window ends on November 15. After that date, any applications received are processed in the order of time/date of receipt.
Families will receive an email notification in early March letting them know if they have been accepted into the school of choice or put on a waiting list.
