Osasuna won 2-1 against Sevilla with controversial penalty

BARCELONA ( Associated Press) – Osasuna beat Sevilla 2-1 to start the season in Spain on Friday, in the first match that the referee said they would no longer punish in La Liga.

Inside the field, Argentine midfielder Alejandro “Papu” Gómez charged and scored the winning goal in the 74th minute after the referee called a foul.

Another Argentine, Chimi Avila, scored the first goal of the 2022–23 season after nine minutes with a precise header that beat Moroccan goalkeeper Yassin Bounou.

Rafa Mir equalized Gomez’s cross for Sevilla with a deflection inside the small field two minutes later.

Both clubs hit the crossbar before the result turned in favor of the hosts in Pamplona.

Sevilla’s coach, Julen Lopetegui, questioned the penalty, which was marked after John Moncayola’s fall following a clash with Gomez before the big-field line.

Loptegui said that, at a recent meeting, the referees had said they would not penalize light contacts in the field.

“When they told us that these actions would not be sanctioned, they gave us a punishment I didn’t understand,” he insisted. “They told us that punishment would not be given. That punishment should be a forceful act of justice. And I can’t guess what he whistled. And I think it was not fair.”

Sevilla finished fourth last season and qualified for the Champions League.

However, Lopotegui’s squad lost strength with the departure of Brazilian Diego Carlos and Frenchman Jules Conde, who formed one of the best pairs of central defenders in the league.

Dutchman Karim Rekik and Serb Nemanja Gudelaj, who were mainly substitutes last season, saw action in their positions.

When Osasuna looked to open the scoring, he made a comeback from a precarious start, which happened when vila won to connect Gudelaj’s back to the cross post.

New Brazil striker Alex Telles starts for Sevilla. Former Real Madrid player Isco Alarcón, Sevilla’s star signing, has not seen action as he continues to train to become physically fit.

However, Lopotegui has said he is confident that sporting director Ramon Monchi Rodriguez, who specializes in finding talent at a good price, will strengthen the club before the conclusion of the summer market at the end of the month.
