It’s not only the Texas football program and the Oklahoma Sooners that duke it out in high-stakes matchups on the gridiron. These two schools have faced each other in some high-stakes events in several recent sports.
Sooners and the Longhorns faced off in some real Red River rivalry games in the final game of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship last week and the second game for Texas at this weekend’s Women’s College World Series.
Unfortunately for the Longhorns, however, they fell short in all three competitions in baseball, softball and football between the previous meetings between Texas and Oklahoma. This includes Texas’ 7-2 loss to Oklahoma in this actual Red River game at the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, OK, on June 4.
But the Oklahoma football Twitter page left no stone unturned to grab the opportunity to troll and troll the Longhorns. The Twitter page of the Sooners’ official football team posted after the softball team’s victory on June 4 that they “have a golden hat you can borrow to celebrate”.
WCWS trolls OU Texas football and softball in one stroke after game
He also posted a photo of former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops in attendance at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in OKC at this Red River game in WCWS. Stops was shown in this picture with the caption “always in the mood for #BeatTexas”.
Stoops was Oklahoma’s head coach from 1999–2016. And he coached the Sooners through their Alamo Bowl win over the Oregon Ducks last season as interim head coach following Lincoln Riley’s departure to join Lincoln Riley last fall.
In addition, a loss for head softball coach Mike White and the Longhorns to the Sooners means they face a do-or-die elimination game against the unseeded Arizona Wildcats on June 5. If Texas beats Arizona to complete the weekend, they’ll have a meeting against another Big 12 foe in the seven-seeded Oklahoma State Cowgirls in OKC on June 6.
If Texas and Oklahoma don’t face each other again in softball or baseball this post season, the next time these two schools face each other in one of the three aforementioned games in this piece is this fall. There will be football. Texas will face Oklahoma in the annual Red River Rivals game in the coming season in football on October 8.
