Outrage in Guatemala over dog poisoning

GUATEMALA CITY ( Associated Press) – A video of two men poisoning three dogs in western Guatemala has sparked outrage among a large section of Guatemalan society demanding justice.

The population took to social networks and about 200 people came out on Monday to demonstrate in front of the facilities of a bakery in the Quetzaltenango department after the population identified the two men responsible for the deaths of local owners, Orlando and Luis Guzmán. Three stray dogs are known as Negrito, Nukita and Loba.

In video from security cameras, two men with bags in hand can be seen walking on the sidewalk and feeding three dogs, who died on the spot shortly after.

Through a statement, the company Alimentos Xelapan SA distanced itself from the facts and declared that “it is not responsible for the personal actions of any person who works (in the company), as everyone acts independently. Works and believes in his works.” They also explained that they are a responsible company with values, but did not apologize for what happened.

Protesters, some of them with their pets, chanted “No Animal Abuse!” in front of the bakery. protested with the slogan of “They have rights too!” and “Killer and Justice!”

The Guatemalan Congress approved the Animal Protection and Welfare Law in 2017, which penalizes animal abuse. The law sets poisoning or intoxicating animals among its most serious crimes, with a fine of up to 12 minimum wages, about $4,300.

In August 2022, a man in the Mexican state of Querétaro was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the poisoning of two Mexican Red Cross rescue dogs, Ethos and Tango.
