Judy, this rule comes from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and applies to private businesses with 100 or more employees. It requires workers who are not fully vaccinated to be tested weekly.
And by the January 4th deadline, 17 million healthcare workers in institutions receiving Medicare or Medicaid funding must be vaccinated.
Mayor Walsh is the labor secretary and now he joins me.
Secretary Walsh, welcome back to News Hour. Thanks for your time.
So you don’t need vaccines for these 84 million private sector employees. They can get tested weekly. If we know the shots work, we know they slow the spread of the virus, they save lives, why not just demand them?
Marty Walsh, US Secretary of Labor: Because we want to vaccinate as many people as possible. And we also have the opportunity there for testing, and for testing, and for masks.
So we looked – we didn’t, we didn’t fulfill the mandate. This was not a commission. The emergency standard at least recognizes people in different situations. And hopefully we can handle all the different situations that people might have.
