Padres beat Giants 8-7 with double by Machado

SAN FRANCISCO ( Associated Press) — Manny Machado hit a tiebreaking double in the 10th inning and the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 8-7 Friday night in returning manager Bob Melvin.

Jake Cronenworth homered, Wil Myers drove in two runs with a late double and the Padres recovered after twice blowing 4-1 and 6-4 leads.

Machado finished with three hits and raised his batting average to .359.

Darin Ruf hit two homers for San Francisco, which has four losses in six games.

After the Giants tied the game on Wilmer Flores’ two-run single off Luis Garcia with two outs in the ninth inning, Machado hit a slider to the outside of the plate off Camilo Doval (0-2). ) and sent the ball deep into center field to score Cronneworth, who started the 10th inning as an automatic runner at second base.

Earlier, Jurickson Profar had driven in Machado with an RBI single that seemed to bounce off Doval’s foot.

Profar was booed during the game for hooking up with fans in the third inning.

Garcia (2-2) overcame his struggles in the ninth inning and got the win.

Venezuelan Robert Suárez worked the tenth inning and achieved the first save of his career. He allowed an RBI single to Brandon Crawford when he was one out and retired the next two batters to wrap up the game.

For the Padres, the Dominicans Manny Machado 5-3, two runs scored, one RBI, and Robinson Canó 5-0. Colombian Jorge Alfaro 4-1, one scored, one produced.
