Padres driver Bob Melvin found cancer free

SAN DIEGO ( Associated Press) — The San Diego Padres say no cancer has been found in manager Bob Melvin following prostate surgery Wednesday.

The 60-year-old manager was recovering at home Friday after being released from the hospital, according to the team.

Melvin said Tuesday that he didn’t think he had cancer, but that doctors would only know until they operated on him.

He said he expects to miss only the first six games of the nine the Padres will play on the road, beginning Friday night in Atlanta; the tour will continue in Philadelphia and San Francisco.

Bench coach Ryan Christenson took over as interim manager during Melvin’s absence.

Christenson was Melvin’s bench coach the past four seasons in Oakland.

Melvin managed the A’s before San Diego hired him on Nov. 1 and is in his 19th season as a major league manager.

Melvin said he has had various symptoms since the team returned from a series of road games that ended on May 4.

The following night he was sidelined due to what the team described as a gastrointestinal problem.

The Padres also reported Friday that third base coach Matt Williams remains inactive due to COVID-19 protocols and they expect him to rejoin Philadelphia for a series that begins Tuesday night.

First base coach David Macias has been moved to third base and Morgan Burkhart will coach at first base just as he did in Wednesday’s game in which the Padres lost at home to the Cubs.
