Padres star Machado sprains ankle, sweeps the Rockies

DENVER ( Associated Press) – San Diego Stars third baseman Manny Machado sprained his left ankle while driving a grounder as the Colorado Rockies beat the Padres 8-3 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.

Machado, in the middle of a stellar season, was injured in the first innings and was ruled out of the game. The Padres said the X-rays were negative.

Randall Grichuk hosted a five-run fifth inning and the Rockies beat San Diego for the 10th time in a row at Coors Field, their longest home win streak against the Padres in team history.

Machado was injured after hitting a grounder that slowly rolled towards pitcher Antonio Senzatella. Machado rolled down the line and extended his left foot toward first base as the throw came, but his cleat appeared to slip over the bag and fell to the ground, his leg bent beneath it.

Clearly in pain, Machado, who was out on a half-step game, wrapped his arms around his lower left leg and clasped his hands as the team’s coach came to care for him on the field.

Machado later got up but was unable to put weight on the injured ankle and was assisted at the ground and clubhouse for further investigation.

Machado batted .329 in Sunday’s game with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs.

Senztella (3-3) played six strong innings, Elias Diaz also homed and CJ Krone hit three for Colorado.

Luke Voight and Austin Nola built the home for the Padres.

Voight led the second with a home run and the Rockies equalized the score in their half of the second on Diaz’s RBI single.

Colorado opened it with a big fifth.

Garrett Hampson tripled with one and Jonathan Daza went off, setting up an RBI single by Brendan Rodgers and Cron, eliminating Blake Snell (0-4). Steven Wilson relieved and Grichuk hit a three-run drive to put the Rockies 6-1 up.

Diaz, who finished with three RBIs, took the lead in sixth and a base-loaded walk in seventh.

In eighth place, Nola had a two-run homer off Robert Stephenson. instructor room
