Pakistan storms Taliban-held police station

PESHAWAR, Pakistan ( Associated Press) — Pakistani special forces carried out a counter-terrorism operation in a remote northwestern district on Tuesday to free security officers held hostage by a group of Pakistani Taliban militants detained earlier this week. Attacked the anti center.

Detainees held for years at a center in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province’s Bannu overpowered their guards on Sunday, seized their weapons and held them hostage. According to reports, an agent was killed on Monday.

Pakistani officials tried to negotiate with the hijackers, but after more than 40 hours of failed attempts, the compound was stormed by special forces deployed in the area, according to security and intelligence officials, who did not provide further details.

Till Tuesday afternoon, after the sound of two explosions, thick black smoke was seen coming out of the premises. There was intermittent gunfire in the area, according to the officials, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to comment on the still-developing situation.

It was initially unclear what happened to the hostages or the Taliban fighters. No government or military spokesman was immediately available for comment.

Officials had previously said that about 30 Taliban fighters were involved in the takeover of the compound. They demanded safe passage into the armed group’s former strongholds.

The bold takeover of the compound last Sunday reflected the government’s inability to maintain control of the remote region on the border with Afghanistan.

The Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP, is a separate group but an ally of the Afghan Taliban, which seized power in Afghanistan in the final weeks of the withdrawal of US and NATO troops after 20 years. was captured. Of war
