Manhattan Beach – The Mira Costa Mustang was looking to make a comeback after a hard loss in her last game against St. Francis.
They faced the Parakelet Spirits, who tame the Mustangs, with a close 28-27 victory on Friday.
The first half was a feeling-out process for the Mustangs (1-2).
In the first quarter, led by quarterback Tajian Brown and trailing Kai Brown, their defense was being eroded by the Spirits’ offense. Tazin bowled a graceful delivery to wide receiver Treshun Hurry for a 77-yard touchdown in the middle of the first quarter and made it 7-0 for the visitors.
Kai Brown burned down the Mustangs’ defense for 40 yards in the first half. It looked like the Spirits were going to be able to do just about anything in the game.
Then quarterback Casey Pavlik and running back Matthew Kraskoskas began to offense the Mustangs into rhythm. Pavlik got the Mustangs on the board with a 57-yard pass to Cole Crotty at the start of the second quarter to tie the game 7-7.
On his next possession Kraskouskas took the ball down inside the red zone for the offense and Pavlick threw a back shoulder fade to Reese Leonard for 6 yards and a 14-7 lead.
However, the second half was a different story. Both the teams made their adjustments in the locker room and it showed. The Mustangs took possession of the ball in the second half down the field to score, with Pavlik hitting Krotti again for his second score of the game to take a 21–7 lead.
The next series for the Spirit ended with a rumble that was promptly returned by the Mustangs a few minutes later. On his next possession, the Spirit threw another long touchdown pass from Brown and took the lead in the one-possession game at 21–14.
However, the Mustangs did not let their pace dampen even in the second half. As soon as he found the ball on kickoff, he took it down and scored again, Pavlik bowled his fourth touchdown of the night, but missed an extra point, leaving the door open for the Spirits to return 27–14.
Paraclete will once again take the field and score on the field this time with the Browns, reducing the deficit to just six points at 27-21.
With only three minutes left in the game, the Spirits took the ball down the field and were able to score the ball less than a minute into the game, with a touchdown pass and extra point to rush from Brown. 28 -27 lead.
Pavlik tried his best to make a last-second pass into the end zone but it was broken by the Spirits defense and the game would be over.
“I give him all the credit in the world,” Mira Costa’s coach Don Morrow said of Parakelet, “hating him for running the two-minute offense well.”
Mira Costa will face West Torrance at home next Friday.
