SAO PAULO ( Associated Press) – Former Brazilian soccer star Pele thanked fans around the world for the well-wishes he received recently after he was hospitalized in Sao Paulo amid his battle with cancer.
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, 82, who had a colon tumor removed in September 2021, was admitted to a clinic on Tuesday to manage his medication, one of his daughters said.
Several messages of support have reached Pele from different parts of the world, including one from Brazil coach Tite from Qatar, where the World Cup is being held.
“It’s always nice to receive positive messages like this,” Pele said on his Instagram account.
“Thanks to Qatar for this tribute and to everyone who sent me good energy.” “Guys, I’m making my monthly visit to the hospital,” he said.
His daughter, Kelly Nascimento, said on Wednesday that “this is not a health emergency for her father.” Not specified in
The Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo did not release its daily statement on Pele’s health.
On Wednesday, the hospital said Pele was in stable condition after coming in on Tuesday “for re-evaluation of chemotherapy treatment of the tumour”.
The clinic denied that the former player is in intensive care.
The ESPN channel in Brazil reported on Wednesday that the three-time world champion had been hospitalized due to “general swelling”.
Hours earlier on Thursday, Tite wished Pele good luck at a press conference ahead of Friday’s World Cup group stage match against Cameroon. Brazil need a draw to finish first in Group G.
After Pele’s tumor was removed more than a year ago, the hospital said the former player would begin chemotherapy treatment, but did not say whether the cancer had spread to the patient’s other organs.
Since then, Pele has been going to the hospital every month for review.
Pelé helped Brazil win World Cups in 1958, 1962 and 1970 with his goals, and remains the top scorer for the yellow-green team with 77 goals in 92 games.
