Pele’s family gathered at a hospital in Sao Paulo

SAO PAULO ( Associated Press) – Relatives of Brazilian soccer star Pele have gathered at Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital, where the 82-year-old icon has been since late November.

Doctors said days ago that Pele’s cancer had progressed, adding that the three-time world champion was receiving “more care” because of “kidney and heart problems”. Since then no further statement has been issued by the hospital.

One of Pele’s sons, Edson Cholbi Nascimento, better known as Edinho, arrived at a press conference on Saturday after denying he was visiting his father in hospital. Edinho, who worked for a soccer club in southern Brazil, then said only doctors could help his father.

“He (Edson) is here,” one of Pele’s daughters, Kelly Nascimento, confirmed in an Instagram post alongside a photo of her in hospital with Edinho and their two children. “I will not go, no one will get me out of here.”

Hours later, Edinho, a former goalkeeper for Brazil’s Santos, published a photo in which he is seen holding his father’s hand.

The star’s son wrote: “Dad… you are my strength.”

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known worldwide as Pele, underwent surgery in September 2021 to remove a colon tumour. His family and the hospital have not disclosed whether the cancer has spread to any other part of his body.

Kely Nascimento and her sister Flavia Arantes do Nascimento used their social media accounts late Friday to post an undated photo of Pele, apparently holding Kely by the arm as she lay in her hospital bed and Flavia slept on a sofa.

“We’re still here, in this fight and with faith. One more night together”, wrote Kelly Nascimento.

The hospital did not mention any symptoms of Pele’s recent respiratory infection, which was exacerbated by COVID-19.

The Folha de S. Paulo newspaper had earlier reported that Pele’s chemotherapy was not working and doctors decided to keep him in palliative care. The former soccer player’s family denied that version, and The Associated Press could not confirm it.

Pelé helped Brazil win the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups, and remains one of the team’s top scorers with 77 goals. Neymar equaled Pele’s record during the last World Cup.
