Pele’s funeral will be held in Santos on Monday

SAO PAULO ( Associated Press) – The stadium where the great Pele played some of the best matches of his career will also hold his funeral on Monday and Tuesday.

Santos, the club where Pelé played in Brazil, indicated in a statement that the public would be able to say goodbye at the Vila Belmiro stadium on the outskirts of Sao Paulo.

Pele, whose full name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, died on Thursday after a long battle with cancer. He was 82 years old.

Santos said the casket with the three-time World Cup champion would leave from the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo on Monday morning and be placed in the central circle on the stadium’s grounds.

The journeys will start at 10 am on Monday and end at the same time the next day.

Pele’s casket will be carried through the streets of Santos and past the home of his 100-year-old mother, Celeste. Recent reports in the Brazilian press indicated that Pele’s mother could not leave her bed and was unwell.

The burial will take place in the Memorial Necropole Acumenica, a vertical cemetery in Santos and will be attended only by the family.

Pele had a house in Santos, where he lived for most of his life. He spent his last years in the city of Guaruja.

In September 2021, Pele had a colon tumor removed. Neither the family nor the hospital indicated whether it had spread to other organs. I returned to Albert Einstein Hospital on 29 November for COVID-19 and a respiratory infection.

Last week, the hospital acknowledged in a statement that the cancer had progressed.

Pelé led Brazil to World Cup victories in 1958, 1962 and 1970, and remains one of the team’s all-time leading scorers with 77 goals. Neymar equaled his record during the World Cup in Qatar.
