Quarantine breaker in Austria accused of negligent murder
Pensioner dies of corona – investigation against neighbor
A woman broke the Corona Quarantine in Austria. Soon after, his neighbor also contracted the virus – and he died. Now the investigation is going on in the case of negligent murder of the woman.
In December 2021, an Austrian woman had a corona. Despite the quarantine rules in force at that time, he left his apartment several times. Neighbors complained when the patient was found inside and outside the house.
After a while a pensioner living in the same house also got infected. According to the Austrian newspaper “Heut”, it is likely that he became infected when he met his neighbor, for example in the stairwell. As the man’s condition continued to deteriorate, he had to be admitted to the hospital. He eventually died there in mid-January 2022.
Pensioner almost certainly infected by neighbor
The neighbors of the infected Austrian had already informed the local health authority about the quarantine violation. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is now starting an investigation against the woman. The allegation is that of willful endangerment of the community through gross negligence and communicable diseases.
As the spokesman for the Office of the Responsible Public Prosecutor explained to “Klein Zeitung”, a medical expert was commissioned with the case. They found that the coronavirus strain found in the pensioner had come from his neighbor “with the possibility of bordering on certainty”.
In the ongoing investigation, many documents are still to be secured and witnesses are being examined. This is the first case in Austria in which corona has been cited as a “weapon”. The interrogation of the accused is also going on. Only then will it be decided whether there will actually be an indictment or not. (obf)
