Peruvian crafts have potential for demand in the US, Canada and Europe

Peruvian handicrafts have potential as there is a constant demand from the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and the Netherlands due to the quality of the offer due to the skills of the artisans, highlights the Handicrafts Committee President of the Association of Exporters (Adex), Orlando Vasquez Buenano.

With a view to continue identifying more and more buyers, craft exporting companies will participate in specialized fairs in the US and Germany this year, he added.

He also indicated that northern European countries such as Denmark and Sweden represent an opportunity for Peruvian crafts.

Similarly, he considered coordination with the Dubai Foreign Trade Office (OCEX) as “crucial” to expand the exportable supply of handicrafts.

On the other hand, he estimated that Peruvian handicrafts exports would have reached $42 million at the end of 2012, down from the $65 million registered in 2012.

He said that the last few months have been difficult for the exports of this sector due to the political and social problems of the country.

“Now that we have new authorizations at the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, we will seek joint work to achieve the recovery of our sector,” he said.

One of the proposals to be made would be the reactivation of the Craft Working Table, wherein pending agenda items were discussed, problems of the sector were analyzed and possible solutions were evaluated.

“We have a firm intention to revive this activity that is decentralized and creates thousands of jobs. We will meet with Madeleine Burns, Deputy Minister of Tourism, on whom we trust to achieve the target of more than $65 million in 2012. do”, he said.


Edex Manufacturing Management indicated that shipments of Peruvian crafts from January to November 2022 were 40 million 200 thousand dollars, which is 7.1% higher than the same period in 2021 ($37 million 546 thousand).

The United States led the ranking, adding 25 million 440 thousand dollars (up 8.1%) and concentrated 63.3% of total exports. The second destination was Germany, which despite falling by 33.8% reached $2,364,000.

Other buying countries were Canada, United Kingdom, Japan, Chile, Switzerland, Italy, United Arab Emirates, China, among others. Peruvian handicrafts exports reach a total of 43 markets.
