President Gustavo Petro issued a warning about the increase in the price of gasoline in our country, a situation that has occurred since the presidency. Although the increase in fuel has suffered a series of criticisms since its implementation, experts classify this movement as “necessary and responsible” considering that this strategy is used to reduce the strong financial impact that is in the country.
The statement of Gustavo Petro is a response to what was discussed by the senator and representative of the Democratic Center, Miguel Uribe Turbay, who through his official account ‘X’ pointed out to the National Government that it is crowding the homes of Colombia by increasing the fuel prices.
“The Government is suffocating Colombian households. Annual inflation in August was 11.4%, almost double that of countries in the region. Today inflation is over 10% due to excessive fuel price increases,” wrote Turbay on social network.
What does Gustavo Petro say about Ecopetrol if the price of fuel is not increased?
Regarding the statements of Miguel Uribe Turbay, President Petro gave his reasons why it is necessary to increase the price of gasoline in the country. According to the president, if this event is not carried out, Ecopetrol will go bankrupt.
“They call me a populist and this is pure populism and the worst kind. If this senator’s proposal is implemented and we don’t raise gasoline, Ecopetrol will go bankrupt, because it was bought abroad at a high price and sell it cheap or we will subsidize Ecopetrol in the budget, which means half the budget of public investment and condemn the national economy to recession,” said the president of Colombia.
Likewise, the head of state said that “structurally, inflation started in Colombia due to the import of corn and fertilizers whose dollar prices have risen due to the war and global shortages. “Colombia is making its corn but the friends of the senator decided to import it and Colombia produces Monómeros fertilizers but they decided to steal the company.”
