The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, expressed through his Twitter account that Latin America is currently facing a “democratic crisis”, due to the disrespect towards popular people in elections.
“There is no doubt that Latin America is facing a crisis in the democratic project. Coup and profanity without crime flock and spread faster than respect for the will of the people”, the Colombian president lamented in the post.
He also expressed his call to “strengthen and reform” the American Convention on Human Rights, stating that “this is the best way to implement and expand the human rights framework on the continent, within which political rights are found.” ”
“Strengthening and reforming the American Human Rights Convention, as I propose, is the best way to implement and broaden the human rights framework on the continent within which political rights are found. First, the popular vote over administrative authorities. must be respected. Only a criminal judge can take away a political right as mandated by Article 23 of the American Convention, which is the law in all our countries.”
Petro’s awakening is taking place in the midst of political and governmental crisis in many countries of the region. In Ecuador, for example, President Guillermo Lasso decided to dissolve the National Assembly after that parliamentary body began a political trial against him to determine his responsibility in a crime of alleged corruption.

Es indudable que Latinoamerica vive una crisis en el proyecto democrático. Golpes de estado y defenestraciones sin delito pululan y se extienden más rápidamente que el respeto a la voluntad de los pueblos
