Atlanta-Phil Mickelson participated in the Ryder Cup for the 13th consecutive time, this time without his club.
Mickelson filled Steve Stricker’s list of five assistant captains for the US team, which attempted to take back the trophy from Europe in the Whistler Channel from September 24th to 26th.
Fred Couples was also announced as an assistant on Wednesday, joining Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson and Davis Love III.
“For some time, I have been in close contact with Freddy and Phil to talk about all the things in the Ryder Cup,” Stricker said. “They provide honest and influential feedback and are passionate about the Ryder Cup. I am honored that they are willing to join our team and help us win the Whistle Strait in a few weeks.”
Mickelson said on Twitter that he “feels humble and honored” and hopes to help in any way.
Since his 3-0 record at Oak Mountain in 1995, he has participated in every Ryder Cup-the year before Tiger Woods became a professional player-and has maintained the record for the most games played by both teams. In his 12 appearances as a player, the Americans have won 3 times.
The six-time Grand Slam champion is an important part of the Ryder Cup task force, which was formed after the defeat in Gleneagles in 2014. Mickelson questioned at the closing press conference American PGA and Captain Tom Watson, because they are far from effective models.
In that task force, players have more say in choosing the captain, and the next plan is to serve as an assistant before becoming the captain. In addition, the outgoing captain will become one of the assistants in the next Ryder Cup to establish continuity.
Wednesday’s announcement means that Woods will not be an assistant in Whistler Strait-considering he was injured in a car accident in February, this seems unlikely-because the team is limited to five assistant captains.
Patrick Cantlay inadvertently announced the couple on Sunday that he won the BMW Championship and thus won the sixth and final automatic point for the US team.
“Fred Couples texted me this week saying that it looks like he will be one of the assistant captains, so he will be there,” Cantlay said.
This will be the second time Cabos has served as the assistant captain of the Ryder Cup. In 2012, he also played for Love in Medina, and he was one of the most popular American captains in the Presidents Cup. He led three games in a row, all of them were victories.
