A man died after being attacked by an American bully dog in Walsall on Thursday. And on Saturday an 11-year-old girl also fell victim to an American bully dog attack in Bordesley Green, Birmingham.
After two consecutive attacks within a week, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has decided to ban this breed of dog. The Prime Minister said dogs will be banned until the end of the year under laws in force in England, Wales and Scotland.
However, owners of dogs of this breed insist that the dogs are lovable pets despite their scary looks and appearance. Despite their strong build, these dogs have a gentle and friendly nature, but are known for their aggressive nature.
It is said that this dog breed originated in America in the late 1980s. This dog was created by crossing American Pitbull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers, although crossing with other breeds was done to make it a more muscular dog.
There are four types of dogs of this breed: Standard, Pocket, Classic and XL. The American Bully XL can weigh over 60 kg. It is capable of defeating a grown man.
It is known that the American Bull Dog is considered a separate breed in the USA, but is not recognized by the main British dog associations such as the Kennel Club.
A study published in the Journal of Public Health showed that deaths from attacks by American bully dogs suddenly increased by 10% last year. According to press reports, there were 14 deaths in 2021. News18.com does not confirm these figures.
