Pisco Earthquake: 15 years after the tragedy that struck our country

15 years ago, our country faced one of the most devastating events in its entire history. August 15, 2007 at exactly 6:15, a earthquake in 7.9 degrees Richter scale Pisco (Ica) hit the city.

The movement was felt to a large extent in the capital also. Panic and fear gripped everyone. Those were 3:30 minutes which in total remain in the retina. Immediately after the earthquake, disastrous consequences could be seen. And within weeks the idea was confirmed: 514 people were killed, 2,291 were injured, 76,000 homes were completely destroyed and 431,000 people were affected.

The government at that time decided to declare a national mourning and declared that the region was under emergency for 60 days. The National Institute of Civil Defense (Indesi) was the unit that took over the logistics support functions. The Armed Forces and the Peruvian National Police (PNP) also joined in aid.

help from everywhere

When everything had passed, even the tremors, and peace slowly returned to the city, help began to arrive. The citizens of Lima came together to provide assistance to those affected. Thousands of food, clothing, mattresses, blankets, along with other items were immediately shipped to Ica.

The volunteers didn’t even wait. Hundreds of people gathered in Pisco, the epicenter of the earthquake, for any help. Some acted as rescuers, while others were in charge of caring for people in hospitals.

Countries of the world sent help to Peru

Countries such as the United States, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Spain, Germany, France, England, Canada, Mexico and Italy declared a state of alert and sent aid to our country. Undoubtedly people united in this situation.

However, it is clear that Peru has no culture of prevention in the face of this type of incident. For example, it is important for people to find out what type of land they want to build their home on, and whether the building they plan to live in is earthquake resistant. In this way, they will be able to protect their family and loved ones.
