Poland chooses the US to build its first nuclear power plant

WARSAW, Poland ( Associated Press) — Poland has chosen the US government and Westinghouse to build its first nuclear power plant, a declaration that marks a major step forward in efforts to reduce coal consumption and achieve greater energy independence.

The Polish nuclear project will use Westinghouse Electric Company’s “reliable and safe technology”, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said late Friday, adding that a firm Polish-American alliance “guarantees the success of our joint initiative.”

Poland is planning to build a nuclear plant to achieve energy independence and replace old coal plants in a country with the worst levels of air pollution in Europe for years.

Moscow’s use of energy as a tool amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine and confrontation with the West has given more importance to Poland’s exploration of energy options.

US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said the $40 billion project would create or maintain more than a million jobs for American workers.

“This announcement also sends a clear message to Russia: We will not let you continue to weaponize energy,” Granholm tweeted. “The West will unite against this unprovoked aggression and diversify energy supply chains and strengthen climate cooperation.”

The deal is for the first three reactors at a nuclear power plant located in northern Poland, which officials say should start producing electricity in 2033. Poland has also studied proposals from France and South Korea.
