Poland decided to change coach after the World Cup

WARSAW ( Associated Press) – Poland coach Czesław Michniewicz will no longer lead the national team, the Polish soccer federation announced Thursday.

Michniewicz had a contract expiring on 31 December, but the federation decided not to renew it.

Poland has reached the last-16 in the recent World Cup in Qatar. It was the first time the team had reached the knockout stage of a World Cup in 36 years.

“For this, Czeslaw Michniewicz deserves to be thanked,” Cezry Kulesza, president of the Polish FA, said in a statement.

Kuleza said the unit would soon look for a new coach.

Polish media reported that several veterans of the national team were dissatisfied with the coach after a 3–1 loss to France in the round of 16. The issue of player awards, which the government was about to accept, also created conflict of interest in Qatar.

The federation said the decision took into account “the future of the team and the direction of its development plans”.

Michniewicz took over from Portugal’s Paulo Sousa in January. His predecessor accepted an offer to manage Brazilian club Flamengo.

Michniewicz led Poland during the World Cup playoffs in March. They defeated Sweden after Russia was expelled by FIFA.

Poland will be back on the pitch in March when European Championship qualifiers begin. The Poles were dropped in a group in which they would face the Czech Republic, Albania, Moldova and the Faroe Islands. The first two will qualify for Euro 2024 to be held in Germany.

Kulesza said, “The new coach will have to improve the image of the team and win the support of the fans.”

“Coach, thank you for working 11 months with the Polish national team. Best wishes for your future career!”
