Poland reviews security after divers found in major port

WARSAW ( Associated Press) — Polish authorities are reviewing surveillance of its oil and gas facilities and other strategic locations, the Polish prime minister said Thursday after three foreign divers were rescued over the weekend near a major oil port.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said he has asked the secret security services to submit a detailed report on the incident.

Police in northern Poland are facing questions about why they released three divers found near the Gdańsk oil port without detailed questioning.

Security experts say the presence of divers in a restricted area in the Bay of Gdansk last weekend raised concerns about tensions with Russia over its energy supplies. The divers presented Spanish identity documents.

According to Polish media, the divers were rescued on Sunday morning after sending a distress message after their small unregistered boat broke up during a storm. They had professional diving equipment and said they were looking for amber, but officers found nothing on the boat. None of them were allowed to dive in the bay.

Police released the men, despite a high level of security being established across Poland due to the country’s support for neighboring Ukraine amid Russia’s invasion. This raised questions as the phone numbers he had given were inoperative.

When asked about the matter, Morawiecki said that he had commissioned the Polish secret services to thoroughly investigate the incident.

Morawiecki told reporters, “Of course, it may be that they are dangerous people, but it may turn out that they are not and that what they said is true.”

He stressed that Poland has raised its level of supervision of strategic infrastructure following the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, but is also reviewing security protocols again.
