NEW YORK ( Associated Press) – New York police said a college basketball player was killed and eight others injured at a gathering in Harlem on Monday morning.
Police responded to the scene at around 12:40 am after receiving reports of a shooting at a trail along the FDR drive and found several people injured. Officials said the other victims themselves went to the hospital.
The university said Darius Lee, a 21-year-old senior at Houston Baptist University in Texas, has died. He grew up in Harlem, attended St. Raymond’s High School for Boys in the Bronx, and was back home for summer vacation.
According to police, six other men and two women are among the injured.
“This Father’s Day weekend is a weekend that people were going to enjoy with their families,” New York Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell told a news conference.
Police did not immediately provide details about the meeting, possible suspects or reasons for the shootings.
According to the police, a pistol has been recovered from the spot.
The New York Daily News reported that the gathering was a cookout organized by Harlem rapper Rich Rymer, who posted the invitation on his Instagram account. He said his last two cookouts were free of violence.
A shooting guard and forward, Lee played community college basketball in Sullivan County, New York before enrolling at Houston Baptist University. The university said he was to graduate in December with a bachelor’s degree in sports management.
Lee was recently named the university’s male student-athlete of the year. He scored the most points and rebounds last season, and finished sixth in the nation in steals per game, earning a second-team selection from the Southern Conference.
