Police said Thursday they are investigating a shooting in Colorado Springs that occurred after an armed man was shot dead by an officer.
At about 10:10 am, officers responded at 1600 South Nevada Avenue to a report of a man firing a pistol at vehicles, said Lt. Jim Sokolik, a police spokesman. An armed man fired at at least one car that was “busy” and the driver fled the scene.
According to Sokolik, officers met an armed man in the area of South Corona and Wasatch Avenues, the suspect brandished a pistol, and at least one officer fired. The suspect fled on foot and was again seen in the 1700 quarter of South Wasotch, where at least one officer shot the suspect in a second encounter.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital. The officers were not hurt. According to Sokolik, the gun used by the suspect was found. Investigators are trying to find the driver who fled as a result of the shelling of the car.
An investigation into the shooting by the police, led by the El Paso County Sheriff, is ongoing.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will be the lead investigative agency for this officer involved in the shooting. Please avoid travel throughout South Nevada Avenue, especially between Brookside Street and St. Elmo Avenue. https://t.co/Tq26DILrFG pic.twitter.com/HKLTMaZc3y
