Police: Two students killed in shooting in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa ( Associated Press) — Two teenage students were killed and one was seriously injured Monday, police say, adding that an alternative is being introduced in Iowa to keep at-risk youth out of trouble. Targeted shooting was carried out at the educational institution.

The man was identified as the program’s founder, William Holmes, a rapper named Will Keeps, who left a life of gangs and violence to dedicate himself to helping youth in Des Moines.

Police said one person was charged with the shooting and two others are in custody. Preston Walls, 18, of Des Moines, was charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder for what happened at the Starts Right Here event. In addition, he was charged with another offense of belonging to a criminal gang.

According to officials, the shooting was the result of a gang dispute. Police said Walls was on supervised release on a firearms possession charge and had removed the electronic anklet 16 minutes before the shooting.

“The incident had a clear objective. It was not accidental. There was nothing accidental in this,” said Sergeant Paul Parizek.

Two Des Moines teens, ages 18 and 16, died and Holmes, 49, had surgery Monday night.

According to police, Walls and the victim were at school on Monday when Walls entered a common area where the other three were. Authorities said the shooter had a 9mm pistol with an extended magazine, without specifying whether he had shown the weapon.

Holmes tried to lead Walls from the scene, but Walls broke free, “pulled out his pistol and began firing at the two teenage victims,” police said in a statement. He added that Holmes, who was standing nearby, was also hit by bullets before Walls fled.

Agents on scene observed a suspicious vehicle leaving the area and other agents intercepted it. But Walls fled and was captured shortly afterwards. Police said that a nine mm pistol has been recovered from nearby. There were only three in the charger with a capacity of 31 bullets.

Meanwhile, Des Moines Mayor Frank Cooney said the occupants of the car with Walls were also teenagers.

The wall has not yet appeared in the court. It was not immediately clear whether a lawyer was speaking on his behalf.
