Poliovirus has already been detected in five counties in the state of New York. The city is on alert and is now calling on all New Yorkers to get vaccinated.
In the US state of New York, poliovirus was recently detected in samples of wastewater. That’s why Governor Kathy Hochul has now declared a disaster alert. Reports have now been received from Rockland County, Orange County, Sullivan County, New York City and Nassau County.
New Yorkers who have not yet been vaccinated should get themselves and their children vaccinated immediately. “I urge the people of New York to take no risk,” New York City Health Commissioner Mary Bassett said in a statement. “The polio vaccine is safe and effective – it protects almost everyone from disease when they get the recommended dose.”
To expand vaccination, rescue workers, midwives, pharmacists, authorized doctors and certified nurses should also be able to vaccinate in the future. Data on this is to be collected through the New York State Immunization Information System (NYSIIS).
