Political commentator and columnist Mark Shields passes away

Chevy Chase, MD ( Associated Press) — Political commentator and columnist Mark Shields, who shared his thoughts on American politics and his wisdom on “PBS Newshour” for decades, died Saturday. He was 85 years old.

Nick Masella, a spokesman for “PBS Newshour,” reported that Shields died of kidney failure at his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Shields had been a regular on the show since 1987, the year it began airing, except for his regular Friday night debate segment in December 2020. He had collaborated with David Brooks since 2001 to provide analysis and commentary on his segments. According to the weekly Shields & Brooks and “PBS NewsHour”, during and before election and convention specials, with David Gergen and Paul Gigot. There his term spanned six presidents.

Brooks tweeted his 2020 tribute to Shields in The New York Times, calling it an “attempt to capture one of the finest and sweetest men” he’d ever met.

“We have had thousands of disagreements over the years, but never a heated argument,” Brooks wrote in the article. “Mark radiates a generosity of spirit that elevates all who come into his light.”

“PBS Newshour” host and director Judy Woodruff tweeted that she was “heartbroken” to share the news, noting that Shields’s wife, Anne, was with him at the time of his death.

“Mark Shields had a magical combination of talents: an unsurpassed knowledge of politics and an indomitable passion, playfulness and humor that shone through in all of his work,” Woodruff said in a statement. “He was loved by most politicians, but he could recognize fake people and always dared to speak out against injustice. Along with Jim Lehrer and Robin McNeill, he covered what is special about PBS News Hour. did.”
