The first of 20 scheduled walks begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the San Antonio Health Center
Organized by Ponferrada City Council’s sports department and the Dutch Bas van de Goor Foundation, the ‘Way to Change Diabetes’ challenge will begin tomorrow with the first of 20 events across the city with various itineraries. With a health professional as a guide, patients with diabetes will be able to see how healthy lifestyle habits, in this case physical exercise, positively affect their quality of life and other health parameters.
Each walk will last between one and two hours and will be done in groups of about 25 people. Starting at the San Antonio Health Center, the march will begin at each of the four health centers in Ponferrada, where the march will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. The event will conclude on June 10 with a long joint path along the Bass Path, inaugurated in September 2019 with an appearance by the former professional volleyball player who gives it its name.
The activity is free to participants and registration is open until full capacity is reached. Those interested can formalize their reservation through their reference health center or through the project’s website. The initiative is supported by the Bierzo Diabetes Association (Adebi) and Bierzo Health Care Management (Gasbi).
In addition, a nutritionist and a psychologist will hold monthly talks to help promote a healthy lifestyle. During the 20 weeks, certain data related to the health of the participants will be recorded and analyzed before, during and at the end of the program to demonstrate the impact on well-being and health of this type of initiative. For the study to be worthwhile, the organizers hope to reach 100 participants, so they encourage all people with diabetes or pre-diabetes to enroll on the last available spots.
