Without beginning, Yankee Candles is a brand of candle known for their extremely potent fragrance. For the highly illiterate, we are in the midst of a pandemic, and one of the first symptoms of COVID-19 is a lack of smell. Not sure how you missed it, this is huge news.
You can probably see where this is going: During spikes in COVID-19 infections, you see a similar spike in negative reviews of Yankee Candles—particularly those where reviewers complain the candle smells wrong. Or no smell at all.
And it’s not just a couple anecdotes or prank reviews: There’s a real, observable trend. Kate Petrova, a research assistant in the Harvard Study of Adult Development, scraped 20,000 reviews of the most popular scented candles on Amazon and found that it was genuine. “It’s rare … to stumble upon a real observation that can be investigated using such a vast amount of readily accessible data,” she told “The Washington Post.”

While this is far from the only strange side effect of the ongoing global disaster, it is more tragic that it appears for the first time: More than a million Americans have lost their sense of smell, a condition called “anosmia” caused by the virus. Symptoms – and it’s not clear if they’ll take it back. The most recent studies indicate that if you haven’t regained your sense of smell after six months, your chances of it coming back drop to one in five.
That same loss of smell, when it first appears, can also be one of the best predictors of infection.
As has been the case for the past two years, the best way to prevent COVID-19 infection is to get vaccinated, get your booster and wear a mask.
