portuguese football federation fired coach santos

LISBON ( Associated Press) – The Portuguese Soccer Federation on Thursday said goodbye to coach Fernando Santos, whose team was knocked out in the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Qatar along with veteran star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Following Portugal’s “one of the best performances of all time” at the World Championships, the PFP said in a statement on its website that he and Santos “think it is the right time to start a new cycle.”

The parties “agreed to end the Greatest Hits Tour we did in 2014,” it added.

Morocco eliminated Portugal 1–0 in the quarter-finals in Qatar. The friction between Santos and Ronaldo began in the previous match in which Portugal lost 2–1 to South Korea in the group stage. In the second round, Portugal defeated Switzerland 6–1.

Santos left the Portuguese team after eight years. Under his technical direction, the Portuguese team won the 2016 Euro Cup in France and the 2019 League of Nations.

According to the PFP, “it was an honor to trust a coach and a person like Fernando Santos in the direction of the national team” and it “thanks” him for the services he provided with his coaching staff.

The Portuguese federation said the search for the next national coach would now begin.

Santos joins a long list of coaches who have stepped down after participating in Qatar: Gerardo Martino (Mexico), Tite (Brazil), Roberto Martinez (Belgium), Carlos Queiroz (Iran), Paulo Bento (South Korea), Luis Enrique (Spain), Otto Addo (Ghana) and Louis Van Gaal (Netherlands).
