Powerful earthquake shakes northern Philippines, damages buildings

MANILA, Philippines ( Associated Press) – A strong earthquake struck the northern Philippines on Wednesday, injuring at least one person, damaging buildings and prompting many people to flee in the capital.

Renato Solidum, head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, said the magnitude 7 quake was centered in a mountainous area around Abra province.

“The ground started trembling as I was on a swing and the light suddenly went out. We ran out of the office, and I heard screams and some of my comrades were in tears,” said Michael Brillantes, a security officer from Abra town in Lagangilang, near the epicenter.

“It was the most powerful earthquake I’ve felt and I thought the ground would open,” Brillantes told the Associated Press by cellphone.

Brillantes said at least one elderly villager suffered a leg injury and was treated at a clinic, with cracks in the walls of several houses and buildings, some of which collapsed.

Officials were investigating whether there had been damage or landslides in mountain villages along the northern edge of the agricultural province of Abra.

After further analysis the magnitude of the earthquake was reduced from the initial magnitude of 7.3. The institute said the quake was set off by movement in a local fault at a depth of 25 kilometers (15 mi), with damage and more aftershocks expected.

The US Geological Survey measured the quake at a magnitude of 7.0 and a depth of 10 kilometers (6 mi). Shallow earthquakes cause more damage.

The Philippines is located along the “Ring of Fire”, an arc of faults around the Pacific Ocean, where most of the world’s earthquakes occur. It is also affected by about 20 typhoons and tropical storms each year, making it one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world.

In 1990, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the northern Philippines, killing nearly 2,000 people.
