On Thursday evening there was the inauguration of the inn that takes place every year in O’Higgins Park, where the mayor of Santiago, Iraqi Hassler (PC) led the event together with the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric.
The ceremony brought together thousands of Chileans – many of them community residents and authorities – to celebrate the national holiday. After a speech in which the mayor or head of state highlighted the importance of these celebrations and emphasized that they take place a few days after the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the coup, Hassler danced the traditional first cueca with the governor of the metropolitan region, Claudio Orrego (DC) for although this custom usually occurs with the one who presides over the office of mayor and president, the president has excused himself due to an injury.
However, President Boric fulfilled his traditional tenth recitation to open the national holiday celebrations.
“Let us all celebrate our history and our Chile together / With the inns and parades, with payas and counterpoint
Let’s remember together in the country and in the city. “The struggle and dignity of the heroes and heroines/ who gave us freedom with true enlistment,” he began.
“We all make our home/In Antarctica or Putre, in the landscape that feeds us, in mines, ports, side by side./Home exists in many ways, it’s about bridges and not walls. “It combines, I assure you, heritage and tradition, consciousness and innovation, it is memory and it is the future,” he continued.
“And this country invites us to protect democracy / from all its threats, because dialogue is grace. / And I say it, even if I repeat myself: Our history is not written. Every day the whole people, the whole nation writes it in a self-taught way / And today I toast with emotions and hope intact,” he concluded.
For his part, Orrego joked about the situation: “I was ready to do the second cueca stage, not the first, but always ready (…). I love September 18th. I think it is a moment of such great unity and such great joy for the Chilean people that I, together with the Mayor of Santiago, will have the honor of being the first Pie de Cueca of this holiday. Don’t forget it and I have enjoyed it, I enjoyed it a lot and I tapped it,” he added.
