ALBANY, NY — New York legislative leaders indicated Wednesday that Governor Andrew Cuomo could face an speedy impeachment trial if he doesn’t resign, while a growing number of prosecutors also looked to the findings of the investigation that he at least 11 women sexually assaulted.

Cuomo denied that he had made any inappropriate sexual advances and insisted the findings, released on Tuesday, did not reflect the facts. But as political pressure mounted, so did the prospect of criminal charges against the third-term Democratic governor.

District attorneys in Manhattan, suburban Westchester County and the state capital, Albany, said they have sought investigation material from an investigation led by Democratic State Attorney General Letitia James.

Assembly Democrats leading the chamber debated for nearly hours on Tuesday whether to impeach the governor now, wait to see if he resigns, or call the Assembly Judiciary Committee on charges ranging from sexual misconduct to sexual misconduct. Give yourself time to conclude your extensive investigation into the subjects. The Cuomo administration has said for months about the total number of nursing home residents who have died from COVID-19.

If the Assembly votes to impeach Cuomo, the state Senate could launch an impeachment trial “in weeks,” Deputy Majority Leader Mike Giannaris told the Associated Press.

Gianaris, a Democrat, said the chamber has been preparing for a possible impeachment trial for months.

“If the impeachment articles are sent we will be ready to go,” he said. “It could happen very quickly.”

The 150-member assembly would need 76 votes to impeach Cuomo and send the articles of impeachment to the Senate. The assembly consists of 106 Democrats, 43 Republicans and one independent.

At least two dozen Assembly Democrats called for impeachment in public statements released Tuesday, according to a tally compiled by the Associated Press. Some said the assembly should vote for impeachment now, while others said the chamber should impeach Cuomo if he does not resign.

Assembly Republican Leader Will Barkley urged Speaker Carl Hasty, a Democrat, to convene an emergency special session to vote to impeach Cuomo.

James’ investigation by two outside attorneys painted a “deeply disturbing yet candid picture” of a governor who touched or made sexually inappropriate comments on a range of women, many of whom worked for him. .
