Printing Impressions 300 ranking reflects trends

It’s no big surprise, in fact, that our 38th annual ranking of the largest printing industry companies in the US and Canada, according to annual sales, is now 2021. print print 300 – and not the printing impressions that appeared in 2020 350. After all, most of the graphic arts businesses on our venerable list report their calendar 2020 annual sales as their most recent fiscal year, with calendar 2019 representing their previous year’s sales.

Given the onslaught and subsequent shutdowns in many sectors of the US economy due to COVID-19 beginning in March 2020, it is understandable that CEOs of commercial printing companies are not rushing to report their annual sales numbers Were. And, although the printing industry was eventually deemed “essential”, many vertical markets that did not serve these predominantly privately held printing businesses. With all the business uncertainty among marketers, brand owners, retailers, and other print buyers, it’s no surprise that many of the companies that featured on our 2021 list in this issue reported double-digit annual revenue declines.

But, as hope endures, I remain optimistic that the pandemic, and all its variants, will begin to subside in 2022 – and that next year’s rankings will return to a list of 350 companies. Still, longtime readers will remember that our list consisted of 500 companies for several years, then dropped to 400 – largely the result of printing industry consolidation – followed by 350 in 2020 and 300 in 2021 – this time. , mainly due to the negative impact of COVID on the industry.

But, just as there is a ray of hope in every cloud, there are also signs of optimism, and some of the businesses on the list have actually flourished during these uncertain times. Not surprisingly, these companies have grown beyond commercial printing through print markets such as wide format digital print output, labels and packaging, mailing and fulfillment, data management and other services.

2021 print print The 300 itself also reflects several ongoing industry trends and dynamics. Starting at the top, it appears that RR Donnelly (RRD) – North America’s largest commercial printer – will be bought by a private equity firm. However, at press time, it was still undetermined whether RRD’s new parent would be Chatham Asset Management or an as-yet-unknown strategic buyer, RRD representing the poster child of large printing companies that have been swallowed up by private equity firms.

RRD joins several others: LSC Communications (Atlas Holdings), IMAGINE (Cerberus Capital Management and Arbor Lane Capital Management), SG360° and OneTouchPoint Inc. (ICV Partners), Vision Integrated Graphics Group (HIG Capital), DG3 Diversified Global Graphics (ResilienceCapital) Partners), and Arundel Corp. (Saouthaire Capital Partners), and others.

While it is perhaps unreasonable to make a broad statement, one has to wonder how these acquisitions by financial buyers will impact the printing industry on a long-term basis, given that the business model for many private equity firms has traditionally been One of the holdings has been to give rights. And then flip it a few years down the road so investors can cash in on their capital appreciation.

Simultaneously, eFront reports that private equity holdings grew by an average of 5.4 years in 2020 to a record high. Therefore, perhaps the buy-and-hold strategy is becoming a viable business model for some private equity buyers, and it is not indicative of a lower valuation than what they paid for.

Commercial printing transitions to new markets

While not necessarily new, another trend featured in our 2021 list is the overall convergence happening across the industry. While the different lanes used to differentiate the different types of printing companies have been blurring for quite some time, printers are gaining momentum — or at least, seriously investigating — in an entirely new market. Segments and product applications continue to accelerate, partly reducing the market penetration cost of digital print equipment. Commercial print shops, for example, are not looking at digital wide-format and package printing as a product line extension, they are looking at direct-to-digital-apparel, and even industrial, printing applications. Jumping in for the first time.

Coupled with the unfavorable conditions from the high inflation rates currently prevailing in the general US economy.

During this volatile time, we can take solace that as an industry and a nation, we are all in this together. We just need to focus more on what divides us, what divides us, and that the situation will continue to improve. Because, after all, a rising tide can really lift all boats.
