Prison attack in northern Mexico kills 14

MEXICO CITY ( Associated Press) — Gunmen in armed vehicles attacked a state prison in Ciudad Juarez on the border with El Paso, Texas, on Sunday, killing ten guards and four inmates.

The Chihuahua prosecutor’s office said that around 7 p.m., several armored vehicles arrived at the prison and gunmen began shooting at the guards. Besides the dead, another 13 people were injured and at least 24 prisoners escaped.

Mexican soldiers and state police regained control of the prison hours later. The state attorney’s office said its staff was investigating the incident.

In August, a riot inside the same prison spread to the streets of Ciudad Juárez, killing 11 people.

On that occasion, two prisoners were murdered inside the prison and later suspected gang members opened fire in the city, killing four employees of a radio station who were promoting at a restaurant.

Violent acts are frequent in Mexican prisons, even in some where officers have only nominal control. There are frequent skirmishes between prisoners from rival gangs, which in places like Ciudad Juárez operate as drug cartel cliques.

Immediately after Sunday’s attack on the prison, municipal police came under fire, according to a statement from the state prosecutor’s office, but managed to capture the four men after a chase. Hours later, police shot and killed two suspected gunmen driving a pickup truck.
