When you’re a celebrity in a high-profile relationship, even the smallest decisions can spark divorce rumors.
Priyanka Chopra remembered this in November when changed her Instagram username from @PriyankaChopraJonas to just @PriyankaChopra. The simple transition immediately sparked rumors that problems were brewing between her and husband Nick Jonas.
Chopra was able to nip everything in the bud in 12 hours. responding to a video posted by Jonas with a sexual comment. But she what was troubling was that she felt the need to do so in the first place, according to a new Vanity Fair profile.
“It’s actually a very vulnerable feeling that if I post a photo, everything behind me in that picture will be magnified and people will speculate,” Chopra told the magazine. “It’s just an occupational hazard.”
The couple first started dating in 2018 because Jonas tweeted Chopra, but Chopra has since seen the downsides of social media.
“Because of the noise of social media, because of its prevalence in our lives, I think it seems to be much bigger than it actually is,” she said. “I think we’re giving it a lot more credibility in real life, and I don’t think it’s needed.”
The couple married in December 2018, and Jonas told Vanity Fair that he’s impressed with how his wife is handling the challenges of a high-profile relationship.
“We both know that social life is connected to what we do,” he said. “But we have set real boundaries with our personal lives, our privacy and have worked very hard to create this little safe haven for ourselves with our friends and family.”
This “little hideaway” includes Chopra’s mother, who moved in with the couple during the pandemic.
Chopra said her mom pushed her into starting a production company when she was 30, warning that she would soon be too old to play roles. But the pressure has eased.
“[My mother’s] attention is diverted by my marriage. She looks a lot like an Asian mom and is very excited that I finally did it,” Chopra said. “She didn’t have any hope.”
