NEW YORK — A 21-year-old man was charged with attempted murder, among other crimes, for allegedly attacking his cousin with a bat and then stabbing her at their shared Queens residence on Monday, according to the district attorney’s office. according.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Wednesday that Edward Huerta has been indicted on charges of attempted second-degree murder, assault in the first and second degrees and possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.

If convicted, Huerta faces up to 25 years in prison.

Information was not immediately available from Huerta’s attorney.

Huerta’s 19-year-old cousin suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on his brain, among other injuries, after he was allegedly attacked with a baseball bat and a knife on Monday night.

According to the allegations, around 6 p.m. Monday, Huerta was inside the apartment with her cousin where they both live near the intersection of 108th Street and Roosevelt Avenue in the Corona section of Queens.

The district attorney said witnesses allegedly heard the girl scream. Huerta allegedly locked her inside the apartment and attacked her several times with a baseball bat. He allegedly inflicted multiple blows on her face, chest and arms.

Other family members tried to enter the apartment while Huerta fled by jumping out a window.

Police eventually surrounded Huerta near the residence. He reportedly said, “I wanted to die with her, I wanted to kill myself with her.”

The young woman was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for her injuries, which included lacerations to her face, a fractured skull, bleeding in the brain, and other traumatic injuries. Huerta was also taken to a local hospital.
