The production of organic blueberries in Puebla has had a big boost in recent years, placing it as a leader at the national level. In the past cycle, 2,900 tons of fruit were produced, with 400 being exported to the United States and Canada. The Secretariat of the Entity for Rural Development hopes to exceed these figures this year to produce 20,000 tons.
The head of the agency, Ana Laura Altamirano Pérez, announced this goal at the beginning of the season for poblano blueberries. After a year, he brought out the necessary organic certification to export to North America.
The municipality of Zacatlán is the state’s main fruit producer and has contributed significantly to its production in recent years. In addition, communities near the Popocatépetl Volcano such as Domingo Arenas, Huejotzingo and Chignahuapan also rely on this activity, which generates great economic and environmental value.
José Luis Márquez, the municipal president of Zacatlán, showed that this activity is very much in favor of the local field, with five groups dedicated to it that distribute beyond the municipality.
Federico Núñez Perea also attended the event as the director general of La Concordia – a farm where he produces blueberry berries. His model of agro-eco-inclusive tourism was awarded “Outstanding service provider in inclusive tourism”, thus becoming not only a leading producer but also a supporter of accessible rural tourism.
As part of the celebrations for the vaccine season, the Berries Club Fest 2023 celebration has been announced, which will begin on June 3.
