Puebla group expresses “deep concern” for the constitutional “direction” of Chile

“We interpret the results of these elections as an early warning to Latin American progressivism about the emerging threats caused by the apparent advance of the regional reactionary right through new political actors and populist slogans that seek social inclusion. , go against legitimate demands concerning the human rights and freedoms we protect,” he added via a statement.

The forum, made up of progressive leaders from 16 Latin American countries and Spain, pointed out that the election results in Chile are a reason “not to abandon but to deepen” projects aimed at “progress, inclusion and social justice”.

The Republican Party, in favor of maintaining the current Magna Carta and the neoliberal model established during the dictatorship (1973–1990), won 22 of the 51 seats in the body that would draft the second proposed new constitution.

The official list composed of the Broad Front, the Communist Party and the Socialist Party came second with 16 councillors, while Chile Vamos (a bloc made up of Renovación Nacional, UDI and Evopoli) gained 11 councillors.

The 51 councilors elected on Sunday have five months to work on a preliminary draft written by the expert commission and which includes 12 constitutional grounds agreed upon by the parties in advance so that the re-establishment proposal could be avoided, such as the recognition that Chile has a social democratic rule of law or a bicameral system.
