Puerto Ricans participate in creation of clinical trial to detect lung cancer

The study is global and the Comprehensive Cancer Center will provide data on Puerto Rican and Hispanic populations.

Because of these statistics, Dr. Marcia Cruz Correa, executive director and researcher at the Comprehensive Cancer Center, explained that through this health center, Puerto Rico joins a global study that seeks to create a blood test to identify the presence lung cancer As far in advance as possible.

The same study indicates that although accepted screening methods have increased patient survival, much remains to be done to prevent the thousands of deaths caused by the disease.

In this sense, Dr. Cruz indicated that smoking is the cause of 50 percent of the reported cases, but there is still no determining factor in the remaining percentage, so the study will seek this information with the aim of increasing early detection.

Patients 50 years of age or older, active smokers or even those who have not smoked for 15 years can participate in the study. “A blood sample will be taken from these patients to study tumor markers, so that they can be compared with imaging tests or scans”, which are approved by health authorities for detection.
